We're engaged!
For the few of you who haven’t heard through email, text message, Facebook, YouTube, or Twitter, but mostly so this momentous occasion doesn’t get left out of my blog, John and I got engaged last week on our trip to Colorado. Squee!
Before we started planning the vacation, we’d talked about how we might be able to move our conjectural wedding date up six months or so from what we’d thought, so I suspected a proposal was coming, but I didn’t know exactly when.
On our first full day in Colorado, John picked out a hike for us up towards Pacific Peak, thanks to this handy website. The weather was perfect, and the views of mountains and blue sky all around were breathtaking.
Part of the way up the mountain we came across a lovely waterfall right off the trail. John snuck us off to the edge of the water, made a sweet little speech, pulled the ring* out the pocket in his Camelbak, and asked me to marry him. And of course I said yes! And of course, too, I cried. I’m tearing up now just remembering the moment.
Because I am a modern, internet-addicted young person, and because I am a dork, after we had a little time to savor the moment between the two of us, I whipped out my video camera to share the news with the internet. Plus it’ll be a cute thing to share with the grandkids, if they still have video that far in the future.
We went up the mountain just two kids who’d been going steady for a while (two and half years), and we came down engaged to be married. And then we got back in the same car we drove up in and went on about our lives more or less as before, except now I’m wearing a ring. Oh, and the many, many months of wedding planning have officially begun.
I am so lucky, you guys. Sometimes I can’t believe no one had snapped John up before I got to know him, because he’s a wonderful person. I know it sounds smug, but we’re amazing together. My life has changed so much for the better since I’ve known John, and I’ve never been happier. He is my everything.

* It’s an heirloom ring that belonged first to John’s grandmother, and then to his mother (both have passed away). The ring itself is beautiful, and I couldn’t be prouder to wear it.

2.5 years, really? already? Whew. Good John. He didn’t get all clumsy and drop the ring into the waterfall. Haha. Let me know anytime you want to play ‘wedding plan’!!! Happy for you guys. Hugs.
