Just Like a Real Grownup
Today was Day One of my summer job as an editorial assistant at a sweet little publishing house that puts out a series of handbooks for practicing lawyers. If you practice in Texas, you can probably guess who they are, but I won’t name names.
No complaints about the facilities so far. Far from it, in fact. I have my own computer at my own giant desk in my own V-shaped “cube.” It even came pre-stocked with supplies: notepads, tape, tissues, a stapler and staple puller, paper clips, a white-out pen, white-out tape, and a rainbow of pens and highlighters.
The best part? My own candy jar, pre-filled with chocolate goodies. Hey, I would’ve done this editing work for you for free if you’d asked nicely, but now you’re going to pay me AND throw in a few mini Snickers to boot? Dude. I’m gonna edit those manuscripts SO THOROUGHLY.
We get free drinks and cheap snacks, too, and in-house massages twice a month. You heard me. Massages included. They showed us the massage room today…it’s really real.
Coming up next Friday is a company-wide bowling competition. Sounds dull, I know, but apparently these folks get WAY into it, with team names, costumes, smack talk, the whole shebang. It’s the talk of the office. My team has a meeting scheduled for Thursday to work out our whole spirit plan. Craziness.
With all the orientation and training sessions today, I only had time to work on my first project a little at the end of the day, but I think tomorrow things will start to pick up. I’m psyched. Seriously, you should see how many rules there are in the big binders they gave us. There are systems for what color of highlighter to use when, y’all. Oh, and people here use footnotes in their emails. I feel right at home.

Are you sure you sat at the correct desk? Fancy. When do we get to come get massages and snickers?

Ha! There’s no way I’m throwing my free massages away on anybody but me. =P
