What my boys are up to lately

I apologize in advance for the trite yearly-family-newsletter tone of this post. The videos are short, I promise.

John, when he’s not grokking universe-defining equations, powering up a new radioactive cyclotron beam, or reminding young zoology majors of the difference between speed and velocity for the umpteenth time, has taken to brewing beer in his apartment.

I took this video a couple weeks ago, so the beer-to-be should be almost ready for bottling by now. John’s a little worried, though, that the room temperature might have gotten too high the first night (when he was feverish and didn’t notice, and I wasn’t going to change the temperature if my poor sick boy was comfy) and killed all the yeast. We’ll soon see.

This is actually the second batch of beer he’s brewed in that bucket. The first one, done a year or so ago, came out surprisingly well. We drank about half of it before he moved to College Station and we had to throw the rest away. Well, we didn’t HAVE to throw it away, but even store-bought beer would’ve been too much of a pain to pack, carry, load, unload, carry, and unpack. Beer is heavy.

Samson seems to have taken a liking to his doggy day care and now spends the day there about once a week. For months I avoided taking him because every time we went, he would stand in the lobby and quake pitifully until someone came out to drag or carry him back to the play room. It was horrible.

But now he trots happily to the play room door and waits to be let in. He’s still a little scared of the people there, I think because he gets his grooming, which he HATES, done at the same place. But it’s a huge relief to let him get a little socialization and exercise without worrying that he might spend the whole day terrified. He’s also getting in good social shape for the obedience classes we’ll be starting next week.

Today when I picked him up from day care I grabbed a Kong toy, too. Sam’s never had one, but I’ve heard they’re awesome. He took to it okay.

His beard doesn’t normally look this scraggly, I swear. It’s just fluffed up from his chewing efforts.

I thought all dogs loved peanut butter, but Sam will only eat enough to get the cookies out. I actually had to remove some of the peanut butter I put in initially to get him interested in it. Any suggestions for other Kong stuffings?
