Steven Pinker (in Words and Rules) says that words borrowed from French or German have regular English plurals (-s); m-w.com says that roof is from &quot;Middle English, from Old English hr?f; akin to Old Norse hr?f roof of a boathouse and perhaps to Old Church Slavic strop? roof&quot; - since English is Germanic, i figure this might cover it. . .
